Google maps or Bing maps?

Side-by-Side Analysis

Map of Eldoret taken by Bing maps
How do these mapping sites compare in a side-by-side analysis? I was fortunate enough to stumble across a tool that brings Bing Maps and Google Maps next to each other so you actually can see these images side-by-side.

Jonasson.org’s maps application sits Bing Maps directly next to Google Maps. Searching for 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, CA will reveal the address as seen by each of these sites. You can zoom in with each of these tools and see how they compare in terms of quality and accuracy.
Bing Maps boasts that each square foot of ground space has an exact coordinate associated with it represented by one visual pixel on the map.
Both mapping applications feature a bird’s-eye view of the map enabling you to see things as they would appear from the side. It isn’t always easy to identify an area from a direct top-down image, so this is a plus.
Below: 1 Infinite Loop / Cupertino, CA
Bing Maps

Google Maps

Between these two images, I’d have to pick Google Maps over Bing Maps for picture quality, though Bing Maps does provide a cleaner interface. This isn’t necessarily the case in all locations as the side-by-side comparison of the greater North American region will show you.

I decided to try mapping the area around the Statue of Liberty to get a quick glance of Lady Liberty herself. I was surprised to find that no Street view or 45-degree angle view of the statue was available in Google Maps (though it is detailed in 3D using Google earth). Google Maps did provide me with a number of location-accurate photos to choose from so it wasn’t a total loss.
Bing Maps, on the other hand gave me a 45-degree view of the statue. Here is a comparison:
Bing Maps

Google Maps

Edge: Tie

Streetside Vs. StreetView

Bing and Google both have an integrated engine that enables you to see the sights from the street as opposed to having to rely exclusively on overhead maps. Google is well known for having cars roaming around the world in order to create unique images of locations for its StreetView service. Meanwhile, Bing has a version of this same feature of its own called Streetside.
Comparing the two is difficult. Each has highs and lows in terms of image quality, and it would be hard for me to really declare an edge here except to say that Google has charted more rural areas than Bing. For example, my old home in Victoria, TX can be pulled on Google Streetview and isn’t available in Bing Streetside.
Edge: Google

Final Thoughts

I’ve spent the greater part of a few hours attempting to come up with a clear victor between the two. Unfortunately, I was unable to. The time of day the aerial shots are taken, details of the maps, and even the street-level imagery taken into account leave me with no clear preferred service. It’s up to the user and their own specific needs to determine that one.
For what it’s worth: I found Bing Maps upgraded images to be cleaner and easier to understand than Google’s. Google has social integration through Google+ for location reviews and social meetups. In the end, it all comes down to what I need at the time I need it.
What about you? Have you tried the new Bing Maps aerial views out? Do you prefer it over Google, or the other way around?

Global warming debunked

Global warming debunked

by Anthony Paul Bright

Every day I force myself to read The Guardian, especially the environment section. Apparently it is not too late to save the world. Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere has reached 400 parts per million, when 350ppmv should be the limit. What absolute drivel! What total ignorance of the history of this globe!
Ah! We have great leaders who are going to fight ‘climatechange’. Really? The fact that climates, in the plural, have been changing ever since the Planet Earth was born, seems not to have been noted by the readers of the Guardian.
Climate is always changing – that is what it does, and has done for millions of years. How do these opponents of climatechange want to proceed? Get real! They wish to control Greenhouse Gases! Well, that is a laugh for a start. 99% of the atmosphere is composed of Nitrogen and Oxygen. Only 1% of the atmosphere is composed of Greenhouse Gases. And what is the predominate Greenhouse Gas? I will tell you, in case you do not know, or in case you have forgotten. 95% is Water Vapour! Do you hear cries that we should stop Water Vapour in its tracks, that we should secrete it underground, that we should not ‘emit’ water vapour?  No, nowhere do we hear that Water Vapour should be somehow curbed. Why! Even those who live in the cloud cuckoo land, that is the chosen zone of The Guardian environmentalists, do not cry out against Water Vapour. Why is that? Surely clouds and humidity have a direct effect upon the temperatures here on this blessed planet?
Ah! We have great leaders who are going to fight ‘climatechange’. Really? The fact that climates, in the plural, have been changing ever since the Planet Earth was born, seems not to have been noted by the readers of the Guardian.

So then, is there a cry to stop methane in its tracks? Is there a campaign to banish methane from our soils? Of course some wily Professors visit the frozen wastes, the permafrost, and suggest that the Global Warming that is not taking place will release methane in huge quantities. Anything for a good story in the Press and an increased government grant!
No, no, no. The fight against ‘climatechange’, indeed the whole charge against changes in climate, is concentrated upon one small trace gas, Carbon Dioxide. The only weapon at the disposal of the ignoramuses, who govern us, is to cut emissions of Carbon Dioxide. Wow!
So let us get some facts straight. 400 parts per million translates into 0.04 % of the atmosphere. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Great Nature produces 97.1% of that amount! That leaves just 2.9% of the 0.04 % is produced apparently by humans. Ah! My warmist friends nod sagely, it is that 2.9% of the 0.04% that tips the balance! What utter poppycock!
Besides which we now know that the Greenhouse Gases cool the Earth, as proposed by NASA.
Global warming debunked: NASA report verifies carbon dioxide actually cools atmosphere
(NaturalNews) Practically everything you have been told by the mainstream scientific community and the media about the alleged detriments of greenhouse gases, and particularly carbon dioxide, appears to be false, according to new data compiled by NASA’s Langley Research Center. As it turns out, all those atmospheric greenhouse gases that Al Gore and all the other global warming hoaxers have long claimed are overheating and destroying our planet are actually cooling it, based on the latest evidence.
As reported by Principia Scientific International (PSI), Martin Mlynczak and his colleagues over at NASA tracked infrared emissions from the earth’s upper atmosphere during and following a recent solar storm that took place between March 8-10. What they found was that the vast majority of energy released from the sun during this immense coronal mass ejection (CME) was reflected back up into space rather than deposited into earth’s lower atmosphere.
The result was an overall cooling effect that completely contradicts claims made by NASA’s own climatology division that greenhouse gases are a cause of global warming. As illustrated by data collected using Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER), both carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), which are abundant in the earth’s upper atmosphere, greenhouse gases reflect heating energy rather than absorb it.
“Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide are natural thermostats,” says James Russell from Hampton University, who was one of the lead investigators for the groundbreaking SABER study. “When the upper atmosphere (or ‘thermosphere’) heats up, these molecules try as hard as they can to shed that heat back into space.”

So the desperate champions who are out to fight against ‘climatechange’ are actually attempting to cut 0.00116% of the atmosphere. Does that not want to make you laugh? Or simply weep in desperation? How is it possible that grown men and women could be such wallies?
It reminds me of a great friend who wished to embrace Islam. He was told that he had to be circumcised. But, he protested, I am already circumcised. What else do they want to cut off?
The sheer idiocy of cutting emissions of Carbon Dioxide has to be seen to be believed. Everybody with a minimum knowledge of Biology knows that green plants love Carbon Dioxide and could do with 1,000 parts per million, both to aid growth and to provide the Oxygen which we humans and all the animal kingdom have need of.
To fight against ‘climatechange’ is to fight against Great Nature, effectively to declare that man in his ignorance is greater than Almighty God. But, of course, those who want to fight the forces of Nature don’t believe, don’t accept, the possibility of intelligence higher than their own.
There is this blind urge to demonise fossil fuels, which are the main providers of power for electricity, which distinguishes the modern world from the Middle Ages. The Luddites wish to put the clock back, and most of them don’t even know what Carbon Dioxide is, in any case. Just imagine if they succeeded, just imagine if we had to rely on the wind and the sun, all our computers would go down, all our trains would not run, all our aeroplanes would not fly and none of us would get paid our salaries or our pensions. Without fossil fuels we would take a gigantic step backwards into the Dark Ages. Is that what we really want?

    The Best Android Apps..

    Real Racing 3 (Free)

Its freemium timers may have proved controversial, but Real Racing 3 is still an excellent driving game, not least because the more you play and the more cars you own, the timer element stops being an issue. Anyway, the game sees you racing more than 45 cars over 900 events, upgrading as you go. The graphics are spiffing, the handling works beautifully, and unless you're philosophically opposed to in-app purchases in this kind of game – which some people are – you'll have bags of fun.

    Opera browser beta (Free)

Opera's Mini and Mobile web browsers have been on Android for a long time, but this is an all-new version promising to be Opera's "best all-in-one app for Android". That means faster webpage loading, an "Off-Road Mode" designed for non-3G browsing, and a personal news feed, among other features.

    Vyclone (Free)

Launched last year for iPhone, video-sharing app Vyclone's tagline is "Film together". That means you shoot video of whatever you like, then Vyclone figures out who else is filming at the same time in the same place, and stitches all your clips together into a multi-angle video. It's in beta on Android, but well worth getting in on early.

    Temple Run: Oz (£0.65)

Oz again, but this time an official splicing of Disney's new film with the hugely popular Temple Run franchise. That means endless-running along the Yellow Brick Road, collecting coins and ducking dragons along the way. It's based on the latest Temple Run 2 game engine, so looks spiffing. Parents of Oz-loving children may be shocked by the prices of the top-tier in-app purchases though.

    Toy Story: Smash It! (£0.65)

If Angry Birds went 3D, with the birds replaced by Buzz Lightyear and the pigs replaced by aliens, it might look like Toy Story: Smash It. A bit. Disney's new game makes for colourful knock'em down fun as you scoot around 60 levels chucking balls at the aliens' defences. The sort of game you buy for your kids, then frustrate them by hogging the device to yourself.

Amazon Mobile App for Android Tablets (Free)

Amazon sells its own Android tablets, of course – the Kindle Fire range – but this is an app for all larger-screened Android devices, designed to put a tablet-friendly user interface on Amazon's online store. You can browse products, read reviews, place orders and track them afterwards.

    Skype WiFi (Free)

Skype has ported its Wi-Fi hotspot-finding app to Android, helping you identify nearby hotspots when travelling abroad, then connect to them for internet access – paying using your Skype Credit. The company charges for the time you spend connected rather than the data you use, for sessions of up to 30 minutes at a time (with the option to reconnect immediately).

TheHumble Bundle with Android 5 (n/a)

It's time for the latest Android Humble Bundle, an initiative where you're offered six games plus soundtracks, and can pay what you like for them. What's more, you can choose how your payment is divided between the individual developers and charities Child's Play and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. This time round, the four main games are Beat Hazard Ultra, Dynamite Jack, Solar 2, NightSky HD, but if you pay more than the average ($6.65 at the time of writing) you get Super Hexagon and Dungeon Defenders thrown in too. Excellent games, marvellous value.

    Photoshop Touch for Phone (£2.99)

Adobe took its Photoshop image-editing software to tablets a while back, but now it's on smartphones too. This app includes some of the most-used Photoshop effects to help you tweak your photos and then either share them on Facebook or Twitter, or export them to Photoshop tablet or desktop software.

    Spelltower (£1.32)

Word game Spelltower was brilliant fun when it came out for iOS in 2012, and it looks just as good on Android. It sees you swiping tiles of letters to make words as they rise from the bottom of the screen, a bit like Boggle meets reverse-Tetris (I said a bit). Five modes offer depth, and the gameplay remains as addictive as ever.
